Hello! Good morning or good evening to you! I wanted to take the time today to showcase one of my amazing suppliers, Carys. Carys is the lady behind, you guessed it, Carys Martin Ceramics and she makes the most gorgeous clay creations. I have not only bought pieces from Carys but she has taught me so many interesting facts about pottery! Such as she will put on a glaze of pink and they all look the same, then after they have been in the kiln, the glazes can all look different and the one that blows my mind the most is with her travel cups, she needs to be really precise with her measurements because the clay shrinks in the kiln and they’ll need to fit the silicone lid. Talk about accuracy!

I hope you enjoy this read, Carys has been working with me on a few projects and one most exciting one that we will bring to you soon.

Tell us a bit about yourself and how you started Carys Martin Ceramics?

I have always been very artistic, loved drawing and being creative in any way, I have always loved folklore, fairies, the environment and loved creating. Originally I trained as a printmaker and have a bachelor of arts and I was involved in sales for many years and loved doing my ceramic designs at home. The business started really from sharing a scrapbook on Instagram of all the designs I was putting together in my home which people loved and started asking where they could buy my designs and I realised I could give back to the environment and create a business at the same time doing what I love, which is being in the studio and bringing ceramic pieces to life. Plus I could also help the environment which is why I designed my travel cup range. The daily wastage of take away coffee cups and the impact on the environment deeply upset me, so not one to sit back the travel cup range was created and I aligned myself with one tree planted a company that gives back to reforestation projects across the globe and actually donate a tree with every travel cup purchased through my store.

Have you always been interested in making more sustainable decisions in your life?

Yes absolutely, I grew up in a small village in the Cumbria region in the UK, we were surrounded by greenery, forests, and a real sense of community in our small village, it taught me to appreciate the beauty all around me and I have always had a deep respect for the environment and tried to make good choices for the earth, long before it was a mainstream thought process.

What things do you do on a daily/weekly basis that is eco-friendly and doing well for our planet?

In the business every decision I make is sustainable, and this is something I am not willing to compromise on, I make my own eco-friendly and toxin-free glazes, I recycle whatever clay I can and make sure nothing is wasted, I also chose to use eco-friendly papers, mail bags and even down to our packaging being completely sustainable too –
In our home, we grow our own veggies and herbs and try to only shop locally to cut down on my eco-footprint. I also chose to say no to plastic as much as we can and if I am caught out without my travel cup I would rather say no than get a takeaway cup, we choose to make conscious product choices and will say no if something is in too much plastic and we try to support companies with an eco-focus for household products like who gives a crap for toilet paper, etc.

What advice do you have for any newbies wanting to start a more sustainable lifestyle?

My advice would be to start with one thing, so not to overwhelm yourself and then slowly you will start to see things differently … like for example take your own travel cup to the shops you will be amazed when you start to see just how many travel cups are litter on the side of the road, in public garbage bins etc – there is a great episode on the war on waste that gives all the information you need and if you have a family get the kids involved – collect your plastic for a week and take to the supermarket to be recycled and slowly each week start to think about ways you can use less plastic.

Can you share with us about your partnership with One Tree Planted?

Yes, One Tree Planted was a very conscious choice for me I did a lot of research on which company to partner with and they ticked all of the boxes for me – why? –They employ locals to do the tree planting, and create jobs in the local indigenous communities where trees are planted  – not only do they plant trees but they ensure that the trees planted are the best for the biodiversity of the region to flourish in terms of animal species as well, they also plant in the best season to ensure the highest survival rate, I also love the fact that I can choose which area the trees are planted, currently, we are planting trees in Peru – why because I visited this region last year and was deeply moved by the beauty of this area and want to see it restored see information below on exactly where this reforestation project is located in the Madre de Dios region, home to over 10 percent of the world’s bird species. The goal is to restore and protect the “buffer zone” between Tambopata National Reserve, Bahuaja-Sonene National Park, and the city of Puerto Maldonado. This area has been identified as a high-risk zone for deforestation and degradation due to unsustainable agricultural practices in the region. Planting trees here will help conserve habitat for the Jaguar and hundreds of other species living in the protected areas while providing sustainable livelihoods to local people.

What is your favourite kind of piece to make?

Honestly, I do love everything I make, each design always takes on a life of its own, is uniquely handmade and I am at my happiest creating in the studio, I would have to say my favorite is the travel cups as I hope that they bring joy each day to their new owner and they are the gift that keeps giving knowing that each day your tree is growing and you are making a difference to the environment across the world (here at home and in the amazon rainforest ecosystem)
